Great Wall of China from Beijing 2026: Which Section to Visit
🧱 The Great Wall

The Great Wall (长城, Chángchéng) is the most recognizable structure on earth — a 21,196-kilometer feat of engineering that took 2,000 years to build. And yet no matter how many photographs you've seen, nothing prepares you for the experience of standing on it, looking out over the mountains, and understanding the scale of what you're standing on.
It's also one of the most overwhelming tourist logistics challenges near Beijing. There are 7 major sections within day-trip distance, each with different characteristics, crowds, and authenticity levels. Choosing the wrong section can ruin the experience. This guide will help you choose.
Which Section?

| Section | Distance from Beijing | Crowds | Restoration | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Badaling | 60 km (1–1.5h) | Very heavy | Fully restored | First-timers who want the classic experience |
| Mutianyu | 70 km (1.5h) | Heavy | Fully restored | Best balance of access and experience |
| Juyongguan | 50 km (1h) | Moderate | Partially restored | History buffs, fewer tourists |
| Simatai | 100 km (2h) | Light | Partially restored | Adventurous travelers, hikers |
| Jinshanling | 120 km (2.5h) | Light | Partially restored | Serious hikers only |
| Huangyaguan | 120 km (2.5h) | Light | Partially restored | Hikers, off-the-beaten-path |
| Gubeikou | 130 km (2.5h) | Very light | Partially restored | Authentic experience, no tourist infrastructure |
Our Recommendations
Best Overall: Mutianyu (慕田峪)
Why Mutianyu:
- Fully restored with modern facilities (toilets, cable cars, slides)
- Beautiful surrounding scenery — tree-covered mountains
- Less crowded than Badaling but still accessible
- Has a "toboggan" slide down the mountain (¥100) — surprisingly fun
- Good English signage
- Has a shuttle bus from Beijing (~¥60 round trip)
Cons:
- Gets crowded by 10 AM
- The restored wall is very... restored. Some find it too polished.
Most Authentic: Juyongguan or Simatai
If you want a more raw, adventurous experience:
- Juyongguan — closer, fewer crowds, partially unrestored sections, history buffs love it
- Simatai — more remote, beautiful at night (light show), best for overnight stays
Worst Choice: Badaling (avoid)
Badaling is the original tourist section — the one every package tour goes to. It's:
- Extremely crowded (1–2 hours to get on the wall during peak season)
- Queue for the cable car can be 90 minutes+
- Completely restored — it looks "new"
- Surrounded by souvenir stalls
Unless you have no other option, skip Badaling.

FAQ
Which section of the Great Wall should I visit? Mutianyu for most people — good balance of accessibility, scenery, and facilities. Juyongguan if you want fewer crowds and more history. Badaling if you want the classic experience despite the crowds.
Is one day enough to visit the Great Wall? Yes. Plan for 6–8 hours total including travel. Leave early (7–8 AM) and return by 4–5 PM.
Can I visit two sections in one day? Not recommended. The sections are far apart (30–70 km between them). Choose one and enjoy it.
Is the Great Wall crowded? It depends heavily on the section, day, and time. Mutianyu and Badaling are always busy. Juyongguan and Simatai are much quieter. Weekends are very crowded everywhere.
Is the Great Wall accessible for seniors or people with mobility issues? Cable cars are available at Mutianyu and Badaling. However, the wall itself has steep sections and uneven steps. Wheelchair access is very limited.
Should I do an organized tour or go independently? Independently is better for most people — you have more flexibility and avoid the jade/silk factory stops. The shuttle bus is easy and cheap. An organized tour is convenient if you're short on time or prefer having a guide.
