Getting Around Chongqing

🚇 Getting Around Chongqing

重庆轨道交通线路图

Chongqing's mountainous terrain makes transport unique — expect elevated stations, monorails through buildings, and lots of stairs. Here's everything you need to know.

Metro (Recommended)

Chongqing's metro system has 12+ lines and is the easiest way to get around. Some lines are monorails that run above ground with spectacular views.

The Metro-Through-Building Experience

Line 2 at Liziba Station — the metro passes through floors 6-8 of a residential building. This is a tourist attraction in itself. Ride through it or watch from the observation platform below.

Didi (Ride-Hailing)

Didi works well in Chongqing and has an English interface.

Setup

  1. Download the Didi app (international version available)
  2. Register with your phone number
  3. Link your payment method (Alipay, WeChat, or foreign credit card)
  4. Enter destination (Chinese address works best)

Costs

  • Short trip (within city center): ¥15-25
  • Medium trip (across city): ¥30-60
  • To/from airport: ¥80-120

Chongqing-Specific Tips

  • Your GPS might be confused — Chongqing's 3D terrain confuses GPS. If your Didi driver can't find you, walk to a landmark or the nearest road at a clear elevation.
  • Some roads are underground — don't panic if the map shows you "inside a mountain." It's probably a tunnel.
  • Elevation matters — a 5-minute walk on the map might involve 200 stairs. Factor this in.

Taxi 🚕

Taxis are plentiful in Chongqing.

DetailInfo
Starting fare¥10 (first 3km)
Per km¥2
Waiting¥0.5/min after 5 min
Surcharge20% after 10pm

Taxi Tips

  • Most taxi drivers don't speak English
  • Always have your destination written in Chinese
  • Taxis accept Alipay and WeChat Pay
  • "Ground floor" confusion — the driver might be at the same address but a different elevation. Call them or walk to their location.

Bus 🚌

Buses are cheap (¥2) but very difficult for non-Chinese speakers:

  • Route numbers and stops are in Chinese only
  • No English announcements
  • Routes are confusing due to the terrain

Recommendation: Skip the bus. Metro + Didi is much easier.

Walking 🚶

Chongqing is walkable within neighborhoods, but walking between neighborhoods involves stairs — lots of them.

Walkable routes:

  • Jiefangbei to Hongya Cave: 10 minutes (downhill)
  • Jiefangbei to Yangtze Cable Car: 10 minutes
  • Ciqikou: Walkable within the ancient town (but hilly)

Not walkable:

  • Between different elevation levels — use the metro or escalators
  • Across rivers — use the cable car, bridge, or metro

The Famous Escalators & Elevators

Chongqing has unique vertical transport:

  • Chaotianmen Escalator (朝天门大扶梯): Asia's longest outdoor escalator (112m), ¥2 per ride. Connects river level to upper city.
  • Lianglukou Escalator (两路口扶梯): Another long outdoor escalator, ¥2.
  • Various building elevators: Some buildings have public elevators connecting different street levels.

From the Airport

Jiangbei International Airport (CKG)

  • Metro Line 10: ~40 min to Jiefangbei, ¥7 (cheapest)
  • Airport bus: Multiple routes, ¥15-25
  • Didi/Taxi: ¥80-120, ~40-60 min

💡 Pro tip: Take the metro from the airport. It's cheap and avoids traffic. Follow the signs — they're in English.

Pro Tips

  1. Amap > Google Maps — Google Maps is blocked and inaccurate for Chongqing. Use Amap (高德地图) — it handles the 3D terrain much better.

  2. Pin your exact location — when using Didi, make sure your pin is at the correct elevation, not on a different level.

  3. Budget extra time — distances on the map are misleading. A "5-minute walk" might involve 10 minutes of stairs.

  4. Carry a portable charger — you'll be using your phone constantly for navigation and payment.

  5. Download offline maps — Amap supports offline downloads for Chongqing.
