Getting Around Xi'an
🚇 Getting Around Xi'an

Xi'an's old city is flat and compact — much easier to navigate than hilly cities like Chongqing. Most tourist attractions are within walking distance of each other.

Xi'an's metro system has 8+ lines covering most tourist areas.

How to Use
- Buy a ticket: Use the ticket machines (English interface available)
- Or use Alipay QR: Open Alipay → search "西安地铁" → generate QR code
- Find your platform (lines are color-coded)
- Scan QR or insert token at exit
Didi (Ride-Hailing)
Didi works well in Xi'an and has an English interface.
Costs
- Short trip (within city center): ¥10-20
- Medium trip (across city): ¥20-40
- To Terracotta Warriors: ¥120-150 (consider Tour Bus 306 instead)
- To/from airport: ¥120-150
Tips
- Xi'an's grid layout makes navigation easy — GPS works well here
- Most Didi drivers don't speak English
- Show your phone screen to the driver if needed
Walking 🚶
Xi'an's old city center is very walkable. The city wall encloses the main tourist area.
Walkable routes:
- Bell Tower to Muslim Quarter: 5 minutes
- Muslim Quarter to Drum Tower: 2 minutes
- Bell Tower to South Gate: 15 minutes
- South Gate to Big Wild Goose Pagoda: 30 minutes
Recommendation: Walk within the old city walls. Use Didi/metro for attractions outside (Terracotta Warriors, Huashan).
Bus 🚌
Buses are cheap (¥2) but confusing for non-Chinese speakers. Route names and stops are in Chinese only.
Recommendation: Skip the bus unless you're on a very tight budget. Metro + walking + Didi covers everything.
Bike Rental 🚲
Xi'an is flat and bike-friendly. Great for:
- Biking the city wall (rent at the wall, ¥45/2 hours)
- Exploring the old city streets
Shared bikes (Meituan, Hello) are available via apps but require Chinese phone number and payment.
From the Airport
Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY)
- Metro Line 14: ~40 min to Beikezhan (North Station), then transfer to city center. ¥9.
- Airport bus: Multiple routes to city, ¥25
- Didi/Taxi: ¥120-150, ~45-60 min
💡 Pro tip: Take the metro from the airport. It's cheap and fast. Transfer at Beikezhan to Line 2 or 4 for the city center.
Pro Tips
-
The city is flat — unlike most Chinese cities, Xi'an is easy to walk. Wear comfortable shoes and explore on foot.
-
The Bell Tower is the center — all distances in Xi'an are measured from here. It's also the metro transfer hub.
-
Get a transit QR code once — set up Alipay's Xi'an metro QR code once, and use it for all metro trips.
-
Walk inside the walls, Didi outside — the old city (inside the wall) is walkable. For Terracotta Warriors, Huashan, or the airport, use buses or Didi.
-
The South Gate area has the best nightlife — bars, restaurants, and live music. Walkable from the Bell Tower.
