First Time in China 2026 — The Perfect 10-Day Itinerary

🇨🇳 First Time in China — 10-Day Starter Itinerary

中国首次旅行推荐路线图:北京-西安-成都

Never been to China? This itinerary gives you the perfect introduction: imperial history in Beijing, ancient wonders in Xi'an, and pandas + food in Chengdu. It's designed for first-time visitors who want to see the highlights without feeling overwhelmed.

The Route

Beijing (3 nights) → Xi'an (2 nights) → Chengdu (3 nights) → Depart

Why this route: All three cities are connected by high-speed rail. You move west, ending in Chengdu (the most relaxed city) where you can decompress before flying home.

Day 1-3: Beijing

Day 1: Arrive & Imperial Beijing

  • Morning: Arrive, check in, rest
  • Afternoon: Forbidden City (故宫) — 3-4 hours, book tickets in advance
  • Evening: Walk through Jingshan Park for the best Forbidden City sunset view

Day 2: The Great Wall

  • Full day: Mutianyu Great Wall (recommended over Badaling — less crowded, more scenic)
  • Cable car up, walk the wall, toboggan down
  • Return to city for Peking duck dinner at Da Dong or Quanjude

Day 3: Temple of Heaven & Hutongs

  • Morning: Temple of Heaven (天坛) — watch locals doing tai chi
  • Afternoon: Hutong alleys — explore the old Beijing neighborhoods by rickshaw or on foot
  • Evening: Wangfujing Night Food Street for street food

Beijing Essentials:

  • Stay near Wangfujing or Qianmen for easy access to sights
  • Metro is excellent, signs in English
  • Forbidden City tickets MUST be booked online in advance

Day 4-5: Xi'an

Travel Day (Day 4)

  • Morning: High-speed train Beijing → Xi'an (~4.5 hours, ¥550)
  • Afternoon: Muslim Quarter food walk — roujiamo, biangbiang noodles, lamb skewers
  • Evening: Bell Tower at night, explore the area

Day 5: Terracotta Warriors & City Wall

  • Morning: Terracotta Warriors — take Tour Bus 306 from train station, arrive by 8:30 AM
  • Afternoon: Ancient City Wall — rent a bike, ride the 14km loop
  • Evening: Yangrou paomo (lamb bread soup) dinner

Xi'an Essentials:

  • Stay near the Bell Tower — walking distance to everything
  • Book Terracotta Warriors tickets in advance
  • The Muslim Quarter is best in the evening

Day 6-8: Chengdu

Travel Day (Day 6)

  • Morning: High-speed train Xi'an → Chengdu (~3 hours, ¥260)
  • Afternoon: Kuanzhai Alley — tea houses, Sichuan opera, relaxed vibes
  • Evening: Sichuan hotpot — the essential Chengdu experience

Day 7: Pandas & Jinli

  • Morning: Giant Panda Base — arrive at 7:30 AM (opening time), 3-4 hours
  • Afternoon: Jinli Ancient Street + Wuhou Temple
  • Evening: Street food crawl on Yulin Road

Day 8: Day Trip or Deep Dive

  • Option A: Leshan Giant Buddha day trip (2 hours each way by train)
  • Option B: Dujiangyan irrigation system + panda volunteer program
  • Option C: Stay in Chengdu — Renmin Park teahouse, Chunxi Road shopping

Chengdu Essentials:

  • Book Panda Base tickets 1-3 days in advance
  • Hotpot is VERY spicy — order "half-and-half" (鸳鸯锅) for a mild option
  • The city is flat and walkable — great for decompressing after Beijing/Xi'an

Day 9-10: Buffer & Departure

Day 9: Flexible

  • Use this as a buffer day — revisit somewhere you loved, or explore at your own pace
  • Morning: Renmin Park teahouse — the most authentic Chengdu experience
  • Afternoon: Buy souvenirs at Chunxi Road or Taikoo Li

Day 10: Departure

  • Fly out from Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU)

Practical Tips for First-Timers

Before You Fly

  1. Download a VPN — Google, WhatsApp, Instagram are all blocked
  2. Set up Alipay — link your foreign credit card (cash is nearly dead)
  3. Download Amap (高德地图) — Google Maps doesn't work
  4. Get an eSIM — buy before departure for instant connectivity
  5. Book key tickets — Forbidden City, Panda Base, Terracotta Warriors

While in China

  1. Carry tissues — not all restaurants provide them
  2. Learn 5 Chinese phrases — hello, thank you, how much, delicious, where is
  3. Show your phone screen — when there's a language barrier, show the Chinese text
  4. Don't tip — tipping is not customary and can cause confusion
  5. Take the train — China's high-speed rail is the best in the world. Use it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Over-scheduling: Leave buffer time. China is intense — you'll need rest days.
  • Eating hotpot on Day 1: Your stomach needs time to adjust to the spice.
  • Skipping the VPN setup: You'll be cut off from Google/WhatsApp without one.
  • Relying on cash: Most places only accept Alipay/WeChat Pay.
  • Going to Badaling Great Wall: It's the most crowded. Mutianyu is better.
