Practical Tips for First-Timers
Before You Fly
- Download a VPN — Google, WhatsApp, Instagram are all blocked
- Set up Alipay — link your foreign credit card (cash is nearly dead)
- Download Amap (高德地图) — Google Maps doesn't work
- Get an eSIM — buy before departure for instant connectivity
- Book key tickets — Forbidden City, Panda Base, Terracotta Warriors
While in China
- Carry tissues — not all restaurants provide them
- Learn 5 Chinese phrases — hello, thank you, how much, delicious, where is
- Show your phone screen — when there's a language barrier, show the Chinese text
- Don't tip — tipping is not customary and can cause confusion
- Take the train — China's high-speed rail is the best in the world. Use it.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over-scheduling: Leave buffer time. China is intense — you'll need rest days.
- Eating hotpot on Day 1: Your stomach needs time to adjust to the spice.
- Skipping the VPN setup: You'll be cut off from Google/WhatsApp without one.
- Relying on cash: Most places only accept Alipay/WeChat Pay.
- Going to Badaling Great Wall: It's the most crowded. Mutianyu is better.
